Ok, So you’ve booked your trip to Cancun, oiled up your reels, went to your local fly shop and bought the newest Saltwater Flats Fishing flies, you’ve thrown in some nice shirts a cool hat and you’re all set to go, let’s catch some fish!
Then you’re out on the boat, the Tarpon are rolling 40ft ahead of you, you’re guide tells you: Cast Senor cast….. now…. now 40 feet 11 O’clock quick…. quick but then, disaster strikes…… it’s windy, the rod doesn’t feel the same as your 5 weight you’re using back home and why are these flies so hard to cast? Before you know it the Tarpon are gone, you look back at you guide who is shaking his head without saying a word and that when it strikes you…….. you didn’t come prepared at all! Again you look at your guide who asks you with a big smile on his face; maybe it is better with a spinning rod, here…. You take Spinning!
This scenario happens over and over again to about 80% of the Fly Fisherman who come down to Fly Fish Cancun and Isla Blanca. But not to worry………… there is hope!
Saltwater Fly Fishing is a different ball game than Fly Fishing the streams for Trout. Here you’re fishing with 8 or 9 weight rods, big flies and a lot of times windy conditions.
So what can you do to come down more prepared and improve your chances to actually land a “SilverKing” or a Bonefish or maybe even a Permit.
The answer is practice, practice and more practice, and I don’t mean when you’re out on your Cancun Fly Fishing tour or your Permit trip in Isla Blanca….. then it is already too late.
If you don’t own an 8 or 9 weight Fly rod, go to your local Fly Shop and rent one for the day, preferably pick a windy day and start practicing or even better, take a little crash course.
When practicing your cast, it’s important to put that big fly at the end of your line, this is what you will be casting when you’re down here. You might want to consider to cut the hook off your fly to avoid injuring yourself. Try to cast with the wind, against it and blowing from both sides as these will simulate the conditions you’ll be fishing in. Also accuracy is important, when fishing for Snook for example you’ll be fishing near the mangroves. Snook like to hang out underneath those mangroves, they’re ambush predators and they lay motionless waiting for some baitfish to swim by or even better….. a fly. They will not take the fly when it is hanging in the mangroves most likely your chances are gone………….. so will the Snook!
Listen to your guide, they are most often excellent Fly casters and give you some great advice, also watch them cast a few times. Now don’t worry, you don’t have to be able to cast a 100 feet of line, 30 to 40 feet will do the job in most scenarios, it’s better to cast accurate rather than great distance.
Don’t get discouraged by all of this, it is all part of a learning process, the more you do it, the better you’ll get, like anything else but you will do a lot better when you come prepared and remember…… if it still doesn’t work out on a fly rod……….. we’ll always have some Spinning rods on board. We want you to catch fish and our main goal is that you’ll have fun out there!
